History

The club began its life as ‘Poole Teachers’ Tennis Club’ and was founded in 1959.

The eleven founders were also members of the Poole Teachers’ Badminton Club which only played throughout the winter and they wished to continue their social association through the summer as well. Thus, at a meeting held on 12th May 1959 at Henry Harbin School (now Poole High School) the club was formed.

Membership at this time was to be restricted to teachers and their close relatives and limited to a maximum of twenty. It was decided that, in an attempt to have some relaxation away from the classroom, persons of school age would not be offered membership.

The annual subscription was set at 12s 6d (62 pence).

Although founded as a tennis club, it had a very strong social side, with a wide range of activities such as beach parties, car treasure hunts, skittles, dinners and dances being organised.

After one season at the Firgrove Country Club in Parkstone(now demolished) a more permanent home was found at the Canford Cliffs Hotel (now The Nightjar) The then landlord of the hotel, Jimmy Cooper, was most supportive and over a number of years arranged for well known personalities of the time to be a guest of honour at the Finals’ Day. With the chairperson of the Dorset LTA umpiring the various matches, the winners received trophies and prizes from such persons as Sid James, Val Doonican, Max Bygraves, Mike Yarwood, Judith Derham of The Seekers and Pete Murray, who also played a set of tennis with some of the members.

Unfortunately, in 1975 the Canford Cliffs Hotel changed ownership and the two courts were scheduled to be used as part of the car park. Thus began a nomadic life as the club moved a round the area, using any available courts in local schools such as Henry Harbin, St Edward’s, Talbot Combined. A final spell was at Upton recreation ground.

Eventually, in 1989, the present venue of Corfe Mullen recreation ground was built by the parish council and it was most helpful in encouraging the courts to become the club’s new home ground on the understanding that the name be changed to Corfe Mullen Lawn Tennis Club. With four floodlit courts available, membership was increased and widened to include younger players and today it is possible to enter five teams in the Dorset Doubles League. In addition, internal club tournaments have always been held and the club honours board records all the names of past winners.
