The Corfe Mullen Lawn Tennis Club Championships finals were held on Saturday 27th August.
The weather was beautiful and the turnout was excellent, with several spectators and many club members helping as line judges and umpires.
There were multiple trophies which were fiercely contested and presented to the winners by club president Tony Kellaway.
MENS SINGLES
Winner: James Whitehorn Runner up: Gary Aldred Umpire: Paul Smith
Gary started off strongly and kept his cool. There were multiple hard fought points but James managed to take the first set 6-2. Gary fought back in the second, nearly taking it but in the end James was triumphant, winning it 7-5.

LADIES DOUBLES
Winner: Jess Fowell Runner up: Penny Ruddick Umpire: Jennie Hathrill
A superb game with multiple long rallies and nearly half of the games going to deuce, 5 of them in the first game alone! In the end Jess’ fitness and consistency came through and she won 6-2 6-4.

MENS DOUBLES
Winners: Richard Davies & Luke Fowell Runners up: Rob Dorey & Paul Smith
Umpire: David Reeves
A very enjoyable match with all four players serving well. The first set saw Richard & Luke race ahead with a 6-0 result. The second set was more competitive with Rob and Paul working well to hold the score 3-3. However, Richard and Luke proved the stronger couple, winning the second set 6-4.

LADIES DOUBLES
Winners: Jess Fowell & Sarah Harrison Runners up: Sarah Tate & Lynda Davies
Umpire: Gary Aldred
An exciting and very close match. Lynda & Sarah T eventually managed to win the first set on a tiebreak 7-6. Jess and Sarah T then stepped up a gear and won the second set 6-3. The match culminated in a championship tie break and was won by Sarah H & Jess.

MIXED DOUBLES:
Winners: Rob Dorey & Nicky Long Runners up: Lee Franklin & Jennie Hathrill
Umpire: James Whitehorn
Jennie and Lee started off like a train, surging into a 4-1 lead. This spurred Nicky and Rob into life and they came back to take the first set 7-5. The second set followed in the vein of the of the second half of the first. Nicky and Rob dominating the rallies and they pulled away to win the set 6-1. A lovely game to watch, big hitting from Nicky, Rob and Lee and great net play from Jennie. Nicky and Rob just had too much firepower on the day…well played all.

MIXED PLATE
Winners: Paul Smith & Jess Fowell Runners up: Luke Fowell & Bridget Campbell
Umpire: Richard Davies
A really close first set with 5 deuce games with Paul and Jess narrowly taking the first set 7-5. In the second set Jess decided she didn’t want to choose the takeaway and after a mammoth game with 6 deuces they played at tiring Luke out to be successful at 6-2.

The Jenny Phillips Trophy and the Jeremy Fisher trophy are presented in honour of two previous club members who are sadly no longer with us. They are awarded to the the male and female club members who take part in the most tournaments during the year and win the most points at these tournaments.
