Men’s Singles Final
Simon Ahsan v Billy McCormick
Umpire’s Match Report
It was a cold, wet and blustery afternoon when Billy and Simon started their singles match.
Simon broke Billy’s service in the opening game, then Billy immediately broke back to level the scores. This opening close encounter was to become the hallmark of this match. Both men hit the ball accurately and made use of the whole court. Simon settled more quickly than Billy racing to an early lead of 5-2, however, Billy fought back to 5-4. The next game was very close with several deuce points but Simon held his nerve and clinched the set 6-4.
Billy used his strong serve to take an early lead in the second set. He held this lead until the tenth game when Simon levelled the scores to 5 games all. There were some long rallies with some excellent baseline play ending with Billy winning the set 7-5.
The ten-point championship tie break was exciting with strong play from both men and at times some nervous shots being taken. At 7 points, all it was too close to call but Simon just managed to win the match 10 -7. It had been a well fought match and a privilege to umpire.
